History

Economic activity since 1857

The original architects of the Kanaal Site had an eye for the functionality of the industrial buildings, but equally for their quality and aesthetic proportions. This gives the site a special intrinsic value for the future. The buildings radiate silent force, which lends itself exceedingly well to living and working in the 21st century.

The transformation of the waterway into the Albert Canal marked a revival for the site. In 1956, the Albert Malthouse, later taken over by Heineken, moved into the Stokerijstraat. It became Europe's largest processor of malt. In 1998, Axel Vervoordt acquired the Kanaal Site and established his art dealership in some of the buildings.
